That's right...their minimum quantities of 50oz or more...is tying up $70,000 of YOUR cash flow just to do business with them!
Part of the reason refiners have gotten off scot-free with their greedy grabs of your profits is clearly due to "hush-hush, metallurgicaly sound, refining secrets" carefully maintained on global scale. Primarily platinum refiners are an exclusive, ellusive group with archane formulas, miles of pipes, gigantic furnaces, and many secretive manufacturing projects underway in another part of the very same refinery!! This has been true since UK scientist Wollaston figured out (circa 1820) how to extract and work with smuggled URAL's platinum. These "secret processes" were only revealed on Wollaston's deathbed in 1828! His pioneering work set the stage for routine secrecy practices shrouding the platinum refining industry to this current day.
Platinum group metals are scarce to begin with. Russia's manipulative government controls THE MAJORITY of "now you see it/no, you don't " annual platinum supply releases from their gigantic Norlisk mine in Siberia.
I've got a confession to make: about 2 years ago, I broke down and bought Ammens' newly re-released Plat Processing book from an eBay internet reseller who is so darned proud to offer it. The same critical facts regarding times, temperatures, grams of lixiviants to be used in benefication, etc.,
first. Now, would you small footprint guys like to tell me how excited you are to hear the esteemed Ammens' wants you to be heating (AND breathing???) lead fumes, especially torch generated, even IF you could guess the rest of the his missing details?
I was flabbergasted to read Ammens' talking like that! But, then I remembered why Ammens wrote his kit in the first place. It wasn't to teach the readers, it was to report test results on military scrap, to the government overseers who cut his paycheck.
Taking to lead is an enormously expensive, budget-busting, time-consuming, UNNECCESSARY step.

concludes cyanide processing of platinum is NOT economical either. In fact, it is so uneconomical,
commercial operation size equipment to perform Platinum extraction based on that report
using extremely high temperature cyanide
has never been commercially produced nor a single lab sized nor commercial sized unit sold.
The theory has only been tested in a government sponsored, US taxpayer-pays-the-tab laboratory,
on a single 20 gram sample...and then cyanide method was RULED OUT!
That is the ultimate conclusion of that government study!
Mostly the entrepreneurial Platinum Bullion Scrap Recycler has been --and still is-- left-out of the metallurgical loop for far too darned long.

Here's the pertinent report from an independent and very reputable analytical lab
who conducted an Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy on the sample, per ASTM E 1508-98
at 25kV test on the above pictured honeycomb.
PSThis independent 3rd party test is why this biscuit is in 2 chunks...they took their test sample out of the INSIDE!
While this test is QUALITATIVE in reported results,
said EDX test is customarily within a +/- 3% range of accuracy
compared to a quantitative ICP-AAS test.

These industry STATISTICS available Feb 2003.
Total usage of Pd in auto catalysts to date is 36 million ounces.
About 30,000,000-- that's 30 MILLION oz-- has been used since 1992
and only 1.9 mil/oz has been recovered to date.
With an average vehicle life of 15 years,
recovered Pd will rise from the present 290,000 ounces in 1992
to 600,000 ounces by 2008
and to 4 million ounces a year ten years from now, in 2013!
These 600,000 recovered Palladium ounces will represent about 40% of demand by that 2013 time.
A similar volume of Platinum has been used in catalytic converters in the past.
But with recycling having started in Pt.
a decade earlier than Pd,
11.7 million ounces has already been recovered and is estimated to level off down the line at about 1.3 million ounces a year.
